Pohang develops ultra-thin stainless steel bipolar plate material

A few days ago, Doosan Innovation and Pohang Iron and Steel SPS signed a strategic cooperation agreement. The two parties will cooperate in the development of 20μm ultra-thin metal bipolar plates for hydrogen-powered drones.

Pohang Steel is the second-largest steel group in the world and the largest steel group in South Korea. Its SPS is a subsidiary specializing in the production of high-precision metal products such as metal bipolar plate material. At present, the metal bipolar plate Poss470FC developed by Pohang SPS is resistant to Corrosion, has high conductivity, durability, balanced and stable performance.

It is reported that aircraft including hydrogen-powered drones have a very high demand for lightweight fuel cells. At present, the metal bipolar plate used in Doosan’s innovative mass-produced fuel cell system is 50μm developed by Pohang SPS. The product, the 50μm metal bipolar plate is currently the very thin product series on the market, and the thickness of the bipolar plate used in the current car is about 80-100μm.

It is reported that the 20μm products developed in this strategic cooperation plan will not only be used to improve the lightweight technology of current products but also be applied to small logistics drones (Cago), urban air transportation (UAM), and other products.

The CEO of Doosan Innovation stated that each hydrogen-powered drone uses about 450 metal bipolar plates, which are the core components of the stack and one of the important technologies that Doosan ensures to lead the world in hydrogen-powered drones. It is maintained by Doosan. Design Technology and Pohang SPS’s manufacturing technology jointly promote the application in various fields.
