What is 310 310S Stainless Steel?
310 and 310S are variations of stainless steel that belong to the austenitic family of alloys. They are highly resistant to corrosion, heat, and oxidation, making them suitable for various high-temperature applications.
Grade 310 is a medium carbon austenitic stainless steel used in high-temperature applications such as furnace components and heat treatment equipment. It is rated for continuous use up to 1150°C and intermittent use up to 1035°C.
Grade 310S stainless steel is a low-carbon variation of 310 stainless steel, with a maximum carbon content of 0.08%. The lower carbon content helps prevent carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zones during welding, which reduces the susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. This makes 310S suitable for applications where it will be exposed to sensitizing conditions (e.g., welding or high-temperature environments).
In summary, both 310 and 310S stainless steels are high-alloy austenitic stainless steels with excellent resistance to corrosion and high temperatures. The main difference lies in the carbon content, with 310S having a lower carbon content to improve weldability and reduce the risk of intergranular corrosion.

Advantages of 310 and 310S Stainless Steel
310 and 310S stainless steel offer several advantages that make them suitable for a range of applications, especially in high-temperature environments. Here are some of the key advantages:
- 1. High-temperature resistance: Both 310 and 310S stainless steel exhibit excellent resistance to high temperatures. They can withstand temperatures up to approximately 1100°C (2012°F) without losing their mechanical strength or experiencing significant oxidation or scaling.
- 2. Oxidation and corrosion resistance: These alloys are highly resistant to oxidation and corrosion in various environments, including atmospheric conditions, aqueous solutions, and high-temperature gases. The chromium content in both alloys forms a protective oxide layer that prevents corrosion and maintains the material’s integrity.
- 3. Strength and toughness: 310 and 310S stainless steel exhibit good mechanical strength and toughness, even at elevated temperatures. This makes them suitable for applications that require both strength and resistance to thermal stress, such as furnace components and exhaust systems.
- 4. Weldability: While 310 stainless steel can be susceptible to sensitization and intergranular corrosion during welding, 310S stainless steel overcomes this issue due to its lower carbon content. 310S offers improved weldability and a reduced risk of sensitization, making it easier to fabricate and join through welding processes.
- 5. Resistance to thermal cycling: These alloys can withstand repeated thermal cycling without experiencing significant embrittlement or degradation. This property is crucial in applications that involve frequent temperature fluctuations or rapid heating and cooling cycles.
- 6. Wide range of applications: Thanks to their high-temperature resistance and corrosion resistance, 310 and 310S stainless steel find applications in various industries. They are commonly used in heat treatment equipment, furnace components, kilns, radiant tubes, combustion chambers, exhaust systems, and other high-temperature environments.
Overall, the advantages of 310 and 310S stainless steel make them reliable choices for applications that demand strength, corrosion resistance, and excellent performance at high temperatures.
