Corrosion Resistance:
420 stainless steel bars have good corrosion resistance in the passivated state, especially in dry atmospheric environments and fresh water. However, when exposed to humid and corrosive media, 420 has low corrosion resistance, so it is not suitable for use in harsh environments. Hardened 420 stainless steel shows better corrosion resistance.
Heat Resistance:
420 stainless steel shows moderate oxidation resistance at high temperatures, but due to its martensitic structure, it becomes brittle in environments above 650°C, so it is not suitable for use at continuously high temperatures. It is generally recommended that 420 stainless steel bars be used at operating temperatures below 400°C.
Manufacturability:
420 stainless steel has good manufacturability and is often used in the manufacture of knives, valves, shafts, etc. High hardness and mechanical strength can be obtained through proper heat treatment.
Cold Workability:
420 stainless steel has poor cold workability, especially after heat treatment. It may have problems with cracking and brittle cracking during cold working, so large deformation operations during cold working are not recommended.
Hot Workability:
420 stainless steel has good hot workability, but the heating temperature should be controlled between 980°C and 1180°C. It can be formed by forging and hot rolling, but excessive cooling should be avoided during cooling to prevent material embrittlement.
Machinability:
420 stainless steel has moderate machinability. It is relatively easy to process in the annealed state, but the machinability will decrease after hardening treatment. Slow-cutting and wear-resistant tools are generally used to improve the processing effect.
Heat Treatability:
420 stainless steel can be improved by quenching and tempering heat treatment to improve its hardness and mechanical strength. The quenching temperature is usually between 980°C and 1035°C, followed by oil or air cooling. The hardness and toughness of quenched 420 stainless steel can be adjusted by tempering.
Weldability:
420 stainless steel has poor weldability and is prone to cracking. In order to improve the welding quality, preheating is usually required, and heat treatment is performed after welding to reduce welding stress and brittleness.
