California ports prepare for a surge in freight as Shanghai returns to normal
The head of the California port expects imports to rise as production and life return to normal in Shanghai, home to the world’s busiest port.
The question, they and other experts say, is whether the release of pent-up cargo will again flood West Coast ports that have recently recovered from the pandemic’s massive freight wave.
The port of Shanghai was open during Shanghai’s coronavirus lockdown, but cargo traffic still slowed. Regional factories that make everything from Tesla electric cars to Apple laptops have run out of parts, and some truck drivers have been idled by quarantines.
As cities return to normal, so will trade.
The Los Angeles/Long Beach complex is the busiest port in the United States. Shanghai Port is its second-largest source of containerized trade goods, after Shenzhen Port. After Shanghai was locked down, some factories there diverted goods to other ports that trade with Southern California. Imports at the Port of Long Beach surged 9.2% in April to a new monthly high.
