Stainless Tableware is not Suitable for Storing Food Overnight
Some tricks in life are rooted in “corrosion”. Don’t underestimate this “corrosion.” The mistakes of common sense in life for a long time can easily affect your health.
April 24 is World Corrosion Day. Han Enhou, chairman of the World Corrosion Organization (WCO), president of the Shenyang Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and researcher of the Institute of Metal Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, will introduce you to life tips to prevent corrosion.
Tip 1: It is not advisable to use stainless steel for long-term storage of foods containing salt and acid
Stainless steel is actually not rusty, but is slower than other containers to rust and oxidize, and it is also corrosive to a certain extent.
The salt and acid in the food will accelerate the corrosion of stainless steel and release harmful substances. Such a long time, especially the use of stainless steel to serve food overnight is likely to cause harm to human health.
Tip 2: Metal utensils can’t torment traditional Chinese medicine
The components in traditional Chinese medicine are more complicated, and the ions that can be separated are relatively large, so it is impossible to use a metal container to decoct the medicine.
In addition, in the process of cleaning kitchen utensils, strong alkaline or strong oxidizing soda, bleaching powder, detergent, etc. should not be used for long-term washing to prevent these substances from reacting with metals and accelerating the corrosion rate.
Finally, it is not advisable to place food in metal kitchen utensils for a long time to prevent heavy metal ions in the metal from penetrating into the food.
Tip 3: Turn on the tap again overnight before eating
The surface of household faucets is mostly made of stainless steel, but the inside is not necessarily all stainless steel.
Even some poor-quality faucets still use lead inside, so after a night of stagnation, the remaining water in the faucet will definitely contain a certain amount of metal ions.
After getting up every morning, turn on the faucet for a while before using it.
Tip 4: Regular replacement of magnesium rods for old water heaters
Many citizens have been using water heaters since they bought them. In fact, there is a magnesium rod in the “belly” of the water heater. With it, the corrosion inside the water heater can be slowed down.
Many citizens are not aware of the existence of magnesium rods, which eventually lead to corrosion of the water heater, which should be replaced regularly according to the instructions.
